Terminals (PIN Terminals)

PIN Terminals in PYMNT enable merchants to accept in-person card payments using dedicated payment hardware.

They are designed for stable, high-volume point-of-sale environments such as retail stores, hospitality, and service locations.

What is a PIN terminal?

A PIN terminal is a physical payment device that allows customers to:

  • Insert, swipe, or tap their card
  • Authorise payments using a PIN code (where required)
  • Complete secure in-person transactions

Within PYMNT, terminals are fully managed as part of the platform, rather than as standalone devices.

Terminal management

PYMNT provides centralised terminal management, allowing merchants to:

  • Register and activate terminals
  • Assign terminals to locations or stores
  • Monitor device status and connectivity
  • Configure payment settings per terminal

Each terminal is linked to a merchant and operates within its compliance and risk profile.

How terminals connect to PYMNT

Terminals are connected directly to the PYMNT infrastructure through secure communication channels.

When a payment is initiated:

  1. The terminal sends a payment request to PYMNT
  2. The transaction is processed via the PSP infrastructure
  3. The result is returned to the terminal in real time
  4. The merchant receives confirmation of the payment

This ensures consistent processing across all payment methods, whether online or in-person.

Supported payment methods

PIN terminals typically support:

  • Chip & PIN cards
  • Contactless payments (NFC)
  • Mobile wallets (e.g. Apple Pay, Google Pay)

Support may vary depending on the terminal model and region.

Deployment and lifecycle

Terminals go through a managed lifecycle:

  • Provisioning — device is registered in PYMNT
  • Activation — terminal is assigned to a merchant/location
  • Active use — processing live transactions
  • Maintenance / replacement — updates or hardware replacement if needed
  • Deactivation — terminal is removed from active service

Security and compliance

All terminal transactions are processed through regulated infrastructure:

  • Accredited Payment Service Provider (PSP)
  • Licensed stichting derdengelden for safeguarding funds
  • PCI-compliant payment processing

Sensitive card data is never exposed to PLTFRMS systems or stored locally on devices.

Integration with PYMNT ecosystem

Terminals are fully integrated with other PYMNT components:

  • Merchants and onboarding
  • Orders and invoices
  • Payout and settlement systems
  • Tap-to-Pay and hosted checkout flows

This ensures both online and offline payments are managed in one consistent system.

Why terminals matter

PIN terminals provide a reliable and familiar way for customers to pay in physical environments.

They enable merchants to:

  • Accept payments in-store
  • Operate at scale in retail or hospitality
  • Maintain consistent reporting across all payment channels
  • Combine online and offline payments in one platform
